What is the “Socio Bosque” Program?A pioneer initiative which aims at: protecting 4 million hectares of native forest; reducing GHG emissions caused by deforestation (REDD); and improving the living conditions of the poor. How does it work? The government of Ecuador provides an annual economic incentive per hectare of forest to individuals or indigenous communities, who voluntarily decide to protect the native forest they own. Why is it a pioneer program?Because it provides economic benefits in a direct and equitable manner, to individuals or indigenous communities, committed to conserve their forest. This way, the program achieves the reconciliation between conservation and development. By implementing the Program, Ecuador is proactively addressing global climate change. How is the success of the Program verified?By the use of remote sensing and random on-site inspections, the compliance of beneficiaries is verified. Additionally, an integral deforestation and GHG emissions monitoring system is implemented at the national level. How can you contribute?Through technical support, technology transfer, strengthening of capacities, and financial support. The financial resources are managed through a trust fund specifically created for Socio Bosque.
